Jouflas, Juflas, Tzouflas, Tsouflas, Zouflus, Jufulas, Jouflus, Tzouflas, Tsouflas or however you spell it is our name. We originated in Mavrolithari (Μαυρολιθάρι), a village in the mountains above Lamia, Greece. Although this may not be our original name. It has been said that during the Turkish occupation in the 18th century the original name Baryanitis was changed to Tsouflas. We speculate that, “tsoufla” the Greek word for a barbeque spit (or sword) became the family name. It was with this name that my grandfather emigrated to the U.S. in the early 1900's eventually settling in Colorado and building a successful sheep ranch.
